Royal Establishment at the Neighborhood Flea

Galen is the proprietor of Royal Establishment, a curated menswear collection that has been with the Neighborhood Flea from the first market. Galen is the kind of the small business owner we envisioned meeting when creating the Flea. He is passionate about his area of expertise. He enthusiastically brings together quality items to share the thrill of finding just the right piece of clothing or an accessory to complete a look. Thank you Galen for bringing your collection to the Flea.

We asked Galen to share some of his small business story with us.

What is Royal Establishment?

Royal Establishment is a small vintage menswear brand from Pittsburgh, PA that started as an experiment in entrepreneurship.

It’s a combination of my interest and experience in retail, clothing, photography, marketing, and the past.

What can we expect to find when shopping Royal Establishment?

I stock a wide range of vintage men’s clothing from the 1940’s through the early 90’s. Whether it’s workwear, Ivy League prep, or streetwear inspired, everything is modern, steadfast, and original. For fall, it’s all about plaid flannel shirts, colorful cotton & wool sweaters, and all kinds of outerwear.

Where can we find your collection outside of the Flea and pop up markets?

Selling on Etsy allows me to reach a worldwide audience. I’ve had customers from over 40 countries! But selling locally is much more fun. It’s awesome meeting new Pittsburgher’s & seeing friends, familiar faces, and other local sellers.

Why did you get started in reselling clothing and accessories?

I love hunting for things at estate & yard sales, thrift shops, and really anywhere I can think of. I've been reselling since I was 5 or 6. I used to sell toy cars at car shows and message boards. It's just something I have a knack for!

Regarding clothing, our throw-away culture in fashion leads a lot of negative things: cheap fabric and poor garment construction, horrible labor conditions, literal tons of waste, and an endless cycle of buy and toss. I didn’t think about it at first but a lot of what I resell was on its way out of this world forever. One man's trash is another man's treasure.

What should we expect to see for Royal Establishment in the coming year?

The future of Royal Establishment is still wide open. I’m going to continue to offer distinct collections of vintage menswear online and around Pittsburgh. A website is on the list as are more local trunk shows, a lookbook, and getting into the world of repurposed and custom clothing.
